Hi, this is Chelka (Shell-ka) & Jackie,

two parts of The Fiction Section Collective.

Chelka is a previous cafe owner, has a Masters of Library Science, works at the Northbrook Library, and has over 15 years of experience working at 4 different independent Bookstores in the area. As someone who is obsessed with books, it has been her dream to open a bookstore.

One of the most important lessons she learned owning and operating a cafe is, “don’t do things on your own.” That’s why this project will be a cooperative endeavor.

Jackie is a practicing nurse who met Chelka working at a cafe in Lincoln Square in another life.

A Community 3rd Space Bookstore Cooperative

Chelka believes that Skokie (her community) can and will support an independent bookstore. She has been working with the city for a few years trying to find the right space and moment. She also recruited a team of other passionate book-lovers to help realize this goal.

To the left is Sheridan, a librarian who met Chelka working at Roscoe Books, and to the left of that is Steven, who supports our bureaucratic needs.

Our Mission

To provide a long-term, neighborhood, independent third space that is as inclusive as possible, carrying fiction for kids and grown-ups. We’re going to offer book clubs and storytimes, sell used and new items, and team up with neighborhood schools, businesses, and non-profits.

Small business experience has taught us that trying to do things on your own doesn’t work. Our goal is to make this bookstore endeavor a collaborative one. No one person will be working 24/7/365, burning out, making every decision, and running on fumes. Multiple tastes and opinions will go into running programs and stocking the shelves, which should make a richer experience for employees and customers alike.

Fill a Need

We live in the Skokie / Morton Grove community and believe that the Skokie Downtown area is ripe to support a bookstore. After years of talking with the city we jumped on this opportunity that opened up.

Values Before Profit

Through every step, we've focused on staying true to our values and making space for thoughtful, lasting work.
